If one thing is clear from the local elections in May, it is that the residents of Kingston were crying out for change. They opted for the Liberal Democrats on a platform of “a democratic, transparent and listening council”.
Residents were then left baffled when the new Liberal Democrat administration decided to schedule the ‘Strategic Housing and Planning Committee’ on the same evening as the ‘Community Engagement Committee’, meaning residents could not physically attend and participate at both. And they call it the Engagement Committee – how ironic.
When I raised this matter with both the Council staff and Liberal Democrat councillors some two weeks in advance, I was met with excuses from officers, merely apologising “for any disappointment experienced by members of the public who wished to attend both meetings”.
Even worse, of all Liberal Democrat councillors sitting on these two committees, only one even bothered to respond to my concern over the clash between these two strategic committees. Hardly engaging with residents.
When Liberal Democrats were elected on a promise to be “democratic”, they failed this tonight.
When Liberal Democrats were elected on a promise to be “transparent”, they failed this tonight.
When they promised to be “transparent”, they failed this tonight.
When they promised to be a “listening council”, they failed this tonight.
