Fresh ideas.

Stronger support.

Ready to deliver.

James Giles for LGA Independent Group Deputy Leader

About Me

I was born to a single mother in an overcrowded council flat. Caring for my younger brother from a young age, I was taught by my mum ‘if you can help someone, you should’. It’s this guiding principle that I have kept with me through my life.

The first in my family to secure a place at University, I went on to work as a print and broadcast journalist before entering politics.

I’m standing to be Deputy Leader of the LGA Independent Group to bring fresh ideas, stronger support, and action that delivers for councillors across England and Wales.

I’m proud to serve as the first-ever Independent Leader of the Opposition on Kingston upon Thames Council in South West London, where I grew up and still live to this day with my partner. On the Council, I have consistently held power to account, driven resident-led policies, and worked cross-party to get results. As an independent-minded councillor from outside the Westminster party system (I have always been an Independent!), I understand the challenges faced by lone councillors, smaller groups, and those forging their own path in local government.

Alongside my role on Kingston Council, I work in the Houses of Parliament, supporting the Independent MPs and championing peace and justice - at home and abroad.

Within the LGA, I have previously served on the LGA Independent Group Executive, as well as previously being a Member of the Community Wellbeing Board and Cities and Regions Board at the LGA. I am well-versed in the workings of the LGA, and am ready to deliver to build a stronger group for us all.

My priorities include better councillor support, stronger media and policy voice, and building a truly connected, collaborative group.

I believe that councillors doing politics differently deserve leadership that listens, backs them — and makes things happen.

I hope you will consider lending me your support - and if you’ve already committed to giving someone else your 1st choice, please consider giving me your second!

James Giles

My Priorities

If elected Deputy Leader, I will focus on delivering real, practical benefits to councillors across the Independent Group — whether you're a lone voice on your council, part of a large group, or representing one of the ‘smaller parties’ within our group.

Stronger support for councillors

I will prioritise day-to-day support that helps councillors feel empowered and equipped. That includes:

  • More accessible mentoring for new members

  • Fast access to guidance with a regular online drop-in for councillors to come and get help for issues they are facing in their own councils

  • Better internal communications, and opportunities to share experiences across the group.

My aim is to ensure no councillor feels isolated — and every Councillor knows about the support we can give them.

Raising our voice nationally

With a background in journalism and political communications, I know how to get local stories onto national platforms.

I will work to amplify the achievements and concerns of our members at the LGA, in the media, and in Westminster.

Whether it’s our concerns over local government reorganisation or the urgent need for fairer funding in local authorities, I will ensure that Independent Group councillors are heard and recognised.

Building a more connected, collaborative group

I will work to strengthen relationships across the Independent Group — with wider outreach to councillors who don’t currently engage with us, themed working groups, and informal networks so members can support each other, share ideas, and act collectively.

I believe in a group that reflects the diversity of its members but operates with shared purpose and solidarity.

Fresh, forward-looking leadership

I will bring a new energy to the leadership team - focused on delivering for you. I want to modernise how the group operates — using digital tools, sharper messaging, and more responsive leadership to make sure we’re not just represented, but respected and influential at every level.
